The 93rd Oscars 2021- A Break from the Norm

The 93rd Academy Awards made history even before the awards were given out, the annual event was held on Sunday, April 26 2021. It was an unusual ceremony, coronavisrus made sure of that as the experience was, well, a bit different, maybe even weird for both the attendees and the audience that watched at home. It was held at several locations, due to travel restrictions and complying with covid guidelines, maintaining social distance and masking up, the show wasn’t much fun, but it was interesting.

This year’s Oscars saw a huge break from tradition, it was a year for many firsts in the most prized film and television awards. The Awards have come under heavy criticism for decades over issues bordering on race and gender inclusion, this year witnessed a drastic turn in that regard. It was the first time an all-black producing team was nominated for best picture, the first year two women was nominated for best director and the first time two actors of Asian origin received nominations for best actors. It was also the first time two black women was nominated for best makeup and hairstyling and also now the first to win- Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson.

The best director went to Cloe Zhao for her film, Nomadland. She’s the second woman to win that award and in a strange break from normal, Cloe was handed the award before the best actor and best actress awards. Again, another first, Pixar’s hit animation, Soul won the best animated feature award. It’s the first Pixar film to win an award with a black character as the lead. Still in the spirit of inclusion Yuh-Jung Youn won the award for best supporting award, she is the first Korean that prize.

The presenters had less banter between themselves and award presentation was done by one person. Funny skits were kept to the barest minimum and musical performances were pre-recorded and played before the main event started as guests were at the red carpet. The shocker of the ceremony was the best actor prize won by Anthony Hopkins for his role in Father. A lot of people are disappointed because they feel the award should’ve gone to Chadwick Boseman. Since Boseman posthumously took home the best actor trophy at the Critics Choice, Actors Guild and Golden Globes awards, it was only normal that he gets the Oscars.
